Everything that could break did, Late Monday and Tuesday

Everything that can break has done it in the last couple days at work. I’m the maintenance man for a local manufacturer. The last few months have been a fight to keep boredom at bay. Now it’s not a problem.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not having a bad day. As a matter fact, it adds a level of interest to my job. It also has a side benefit of me looking very needed and since it about time for evaluations, it’s a bonus.

We had a water main break, then the shutoff valve froze shut.
This list of complaints includes but is not limited to…. We cannot make coffee, we cannot wash out hands, I’m thirsty, I have medicine to take, The toilets will not flush……………… I hear this all day from each person that knows how to use the phone system and the rest took the time to find me and gripe in person. They all have one demand, get it fixed now, as if I had nothing else on this planet to do.

Woo Hoo, we now have the valve fixed and well, the only thing worse than having the water off , was turning it back on.

The 30+ year old piping must have had some crud buildup. Most of the faucets in the building stopped up about the time somebody got their hands soapy. This also meant there would be no coffee, but we had an office hero who knew that if you removed the aerator from the faucet it would work.

That was not the worst of things. Commercial toilets and urinals require clean water to operate or they will not stop flushing till fixed. You guessed it, practically all of them were flushing constantly. One person must have had a bad childhood experience with a flooding toilet, because you would have thought the whole building was about to flood with septic water.

I got most of that fixed and then I get a call from the plant, a crane is broken. Cranes are very important to operations so these take priority over almost anything else. I check it out and yes, it really is broken and will require not only repairs but some planning and thinking to rectify the problem.

I go to my office to see what we may have to work with and then the office calls, we need you. My office is at the furthest point from the main office. During my walk there I’m thinking to myself , “what are they bitching about now”.

I get there to hear all about the air conditioner running and some people were cold. I notice that by the thermostat is warmer than the rest of the building, hmmm. I decide to check the other thermostat. I see the problem, somebody must have been cold when they got to work. I have one system set at 80 deg heating and another set at 72 deg cooling, and they wonder why we started putting in lockable thermostats. This was at about 11:30am.

With that catastrophe handled, I return to the not-so-minor problem of the crane being broken. I gathered the parts for a temporary repair, take lunch break. (They are going to dock my pay for it…I might as well go ahead and eat)

After lunch, about the time I’m 20’ in the air working on the crane the office calls. It’s the air conditioner is running again. This time it must have been somebody hot, thermostat set at 65 deg.

Back to the crane, it didn’t take long to finish and I thought for a couple minutes I was gonna be short of anything to do, but no, it was not to be. Some how, a plug to a tool had been damaged and was burning up the extension cord ends. I was out of replacements so I decided to go on a supply run.

It was pretty easy going the rest of the day. I fixed the cords and the tool and tied up some lose ends for the day.

About the time I head for the time clock I remembered something I forgot, the repair parts for the plumbing problems. Oh well, I needed something to do for Wednesday.

Sure was a busy day. Now I’m off to get my last minute valentines day gifts. Hope that goes better.

She takes it easy on me on the rough days. She's been known to even let me get to bed on time.
