Embarrassing moments at work #1

I used to work for a huge mining company. The corporate headquarters is located in England. I was working at their gravel mine location in Waco TX. My job was basically do what ever needed to be done.

I literally had to know how to do every job at that location. But usually it was the worst job of the day. Things like run the open cab bulldozer while it’s 20deg outside or 33deg and raining.

One of my tasks was to do maintenance on the equipment. This would require long hours and lots of heavy lifting.

One evening we were working on a critical piece of equipment. Our national supervisor was there to supervise the repairs and report on mine operations.

He was a real get’r’done type of person. I really don’t think he knew what the words “no” or “cannot do that” meant.

He had said for me to climb a ladder while the main pumps were still running. Water was spraying everywhere. I introduced him to the word “no” at that point. He informed me that I was on thin ice and I should reconsider weather to say that again. We exchanged a few words on the subject and it was settled, I would not be the one to climb that ladder. Some other idiot did it.

Later he wanted to be right there while working on this crushing equipment. I had to go to tool shack for some minor parts. While I was on the ground I asked “does anyone need anything else while I’m down here?” He replied back that he need a 1” drive pull bar. (This is a nearly 3’ long steal bar and it is kind of heavy) . I went to get it and on the way back he said to wait on the ground and throw it up. I told him that was not a good idea, those tools are heavy and hard to aim. That’s when he was introduced to the words “I cannot do that”. He got nicely pissed of and yell throw that damn tool up here like I said.

Well I was kind of pissed about being spoke to like that. I dropped my other tools and then just lobbed it up there. I could not have done it if I had tried, the point end of that tool hit him squarely on the left knee cap. He had just had surgery on that knee a few months prior to fix a torn ACL on that knee.

He screamed, he yelled and fell over nearly in tears. While thinking to myself “what were the odds of that”, I started to laugh. As I was looking for a place to hide, I could hear the guys on the platform starting to laugh. It took a while but the guy did manage to compose himself. He didn’t take it personal but he also didn’t ask for anything to be thrown to the platform either.

What made it all worse, he was looking over my performance review. He would be the guy I would have to ask for a raise. After talking to him for a while I did get my long overdue raise.

True story
