in the belly of the whale
in the belly of the whale once upon a time there was a little boy named jonah. when he was born, he lacked part of his spine and part of his heart muscle. most people thought he couldn't live without them, but his parents knew that jonah was special and even without part of his heart and part of his spine, he would live with them and become jonah the great. he learned to move by wriggling along the floor like a fish and would tug on his dad's leg to be lifted higher to see out the windows. there was a world that jonah wanted. but sometimes the ones that love us are afraid to let us wander. a lady came to work with jonah when he was three. she helped him move and helped him flex and she was a friend of mine. she took him out on the grass and rolled him down the small hill in the back yard and made him helpless with laughter. she covered him with brilliant colored cloth and and lifted it high into the sun. and jonah became Jonah and oh the shine of this boy. he would read anything and everything and tell you stories that were so magical you wanted to live in them forever. his eyes were deepest brown like the darkest earth turned over over in the spring for planting. his fairy houses always had a special room for visitors because, well you just never know when someone might need to drop by and ask a fairy what to do... by the time he was eight, another friend was working with him on pain control but she moved to texas and i took over. we knew each other already but he was very precise in telling me exactly where to put my hands. and then one day i did a hold that cynthia hadn't and he said, call mom. Jonah was in the pool so all i could do was yell. but she came running. and jumped in beside us. i'm a whale. i'm a whale. she laughed and said okay...what does it feel like. i can swim anywhere. i own the ocean and the sky is so blue and the little fish keep banging into my sides...it tickles. and he was laughing. and she came behind me and held him as i had. she leaned over and kissed him and he scoffed...whales don't get kisses. this one does she said. and he giggled. on the day that Jonah passed over, his mother made him a whale again. his father had his hands on his heart chakra and i lightly palmed his feet to send the energy to his crown. all three of us let go at the exact same moment. his mother and dad got into bed with him to hold him until he stopped breathing but the whale had swum on. out to great adventures, to the shining sea with tiny fish tickling his sides. to Jonah.......who some may say lived in the belly of the whale but for those of us who knew you..... we'll look for you in the sea, for there you live forever. You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

Ya know, oui... Sometimes whales really like to swim. Sometimes... they just don't have much of a choice. But--they always swim, don't they? Solar...

So beautiful and inspiring. And a wonder that in this world that a small child can teach us so much about what it means to be human. A treasure of a post. warm xx

So sad, and yet so beautifully touching and heart-warming. Jonah's story deserves to be told over and over. Every life no matter how short is precious and contributes to the whole of our humanity. Thanks for sharing, WE! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas! *Hugs*

The freedom of him swimming in that big, blue ocean, all the pain gone! Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale Her infinite variety. Other women cloy The appetites they feed, but she makes hungry Where most she satisfies. For vilest things Become themselves in her, that the holy priests Bless her when she is riggish. ~~ from Antony & Cleopatra

WE, I wasn't able to read this story until now...you have such vivid, colorful, and sensitive stories having lived the life you have. When you write, you bring out so much emotion to the readers...they live in the stories with you. WE, you really should write a book about the lives in the shelter that you've come across over the many years. It would be filled with so much sadness, happiness, and hope. I bet it would be a best seller...and if you wanted to, you could use some of the money to fund the shelter...I have a feeling it's what you're meant to do. Maybe the title could be "Sheltered"...living on the streets. People are curious about the lives of those who have been there and have been able to move out...stories like Jonah's would change lives of those who are in similar circumstances. People always want to be touched...and you always do it so well. Namaste
