a feast of words
a feast of words turgid vacuous jocular succulent words i heard last night at a dinner party, spoken by one man. not just dropped willy nilly into a sentence, but woven into a conversation, aptly used and with wit. had i not been afraid i'd break his hip i really might have thrown myself on his lap and begged him to take me. it is so rare to find someone who loves language and who loves to engage with others. we talked about so many things and while i'm sure some were of more interest to him than others, he was always ready with a comment. or a question that could turn the discussion in another direction. it was one of the more pleasurable evenings i've had in such a long time. i was seated next to him and at first i thought oh dear, this may be difficult. but as the dinner began, i realized i had the catch of the day. his side comments had me laughing into my napkin and as the night wore on we became quite villainous in our efforts to shake up the more conservative members of the group. he is 89 years old and a retired professor of history from amherst college with doctorates in american history, philosophy and oddly enough biology. incredibly well travelled and married three times, he has no but still sees all of his ex wives.....on occasion. he's published. but it's junk. he's been active in politics...more junk. and now...he's finally at a point where he's truly seeing life for the glorious journey that it is. he told me that the things you spend time on are critical. don't mess around with stuff that's boring. and if it makes you happy or your body feel feel good do it. he leaned over...."i still smoke reefer, he confided. way better than booze." when the evening was coming to an end i asked him if he needed a ride and he said no, his car was coming for him. he said," you have no idea who i am do you?" i said, my new friend? he laughed and said, "yes, let's do that." and we agreed to meet for dinner soon. i only know his first name. maybe he is someone famous. but i couldn't care less. he is someone wonderful, funny and articulate and oh how he spun those words. maybe he's an elf, i know he's magical. You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

Now I'm going to have to check the obits to see if an 89 year old former college professor died in the throws of passion with a much younger woman. As for the vocab, turgid is a bit odd, but I've never been to a political gathering where vacuous wasn't mentioned a time or two.

Serendipitous! Aren't you glad that you paid the proper attention, WE? Not that you'd blow him off, as you are too kind, even if he'd been the vacuous one, but your blog would have taken a different turn. And I'm not at all sure I've properly spelled my opening paragraph. Chas < who treasures evenings like you've described!

I'm so jealous! I love dinner companions like your new friend. What a wonderful way to spend an evening--feasting on words rather than rubber chicken. Never ignore those who care for you you will have lost diamonds while you were collecting stones

WE, Newt Gingrich has been married 3 times and he was a history professor. You didn't per chance attend a Tea Party fund raiser dinner party? Did you?

I could say something, oui-oui... ...but I won't, bein's how I'm given to prolixity. BTW: ya know what the real definition for prolix is? It's something for which one squawks, big-time, about payin' 500 bucks... only to discover it's something well worth shellin' out a grand for. Solar...

that sounds delightful! especially the turgid and the succulent...those 2 things go together very well indeed

A man who can use language is a joy to behold...

I'm jealous. Not of you. Of your new friend. have a wonderful dinner!

'PuzzlePeace', I am indeed perplexed and "puzzled"! Right now, I don't have the foggiest idea from whence you have been reincarnated! I've done a little research, and I know that you started your new blog on March 2nd. I'm gonna read your blog postings and see if I can figure out this "puzzle". A hint would be helpful. I will have no "peace" until I solve this "puzzle"! 1. I'm your favorite liberal. (unless I've been displaced) 2. I no longer have the "biggest cock" on the site, I had that gender reassignment reversed 3. I'm not very fresh or free anymore either, nor do I really live in Montana and I'm not 99 years old. Was that adequate hint for you?

That sounds just wonderful. Gawd I hope that I'm still that sharp when I'm 89.

It would have been such a treat to see you both grinning big-time.

Well, let's see. 5. And a writer extraordinaire 6. And your hubby is a manufacturing manager 7. And you have at least one daughter, perhaps two if I'm not mistaken 8. And you're a huge American Idol fan (BTW, who do you like to win it all? Joshua, Phillip or Jessica?) 9. And you're cute as a bug (with big boobies too!)
