Sundowner 2019 3rd Fight

I don't know why but for the last 3 years around the 1st of September I have recurring dreams. Since this has happened for the 3rd time in consecutive years, I call it Sundowner.
This name came to me just after I woke up from one of these dreams 3 days ago.

Sundowner is a beginning of the harvest season gathering of families, friends, couples and singles of mostly native american decent. Almost like a Pow-wow but the draw for the occasion is not to rejoice in family ties and native traditions although that does occur, It is to battle in one on one in blood sport competition.

3 days ago, I visited with my Auntie that has been dead for 5 years now. In my dream, I nearly cried seeing her as she came to watch the competition and see me fight along with her 's and other relatives that would be participating.

It has turned into a huge but private event. It takes place at an undisclosed location outside of town here on the reservation. I remember sitting on a rock wall this year and seeing a river of headlights flowing into the area where the battles take place. We visit with friends and family during the day and the matches begin when the sun sets.
There is no fanfare or announcements. Everyone knows where to be at the right time.
The bouts are not sanctioned. There is no press, referee or EMT's there if someone gets hurt. The bouts are arranged so there is always an even number of fighters. I don't know how or why but the first year in 2017 there were 10. Last year there were 60 and we are at 40 right now for 2019. We are hoping to get some women in the bouts this year but I don;t know if that will happen or not. We'll see.
Last year there were 60 fighters or 30 bouts. You do not know who you will fight. You draw a number out of a hat from 1 to 30 that is the placement you have. I drew 6 last year and the guy I fought also drew 6 and we were the 6th bout. I was 2 in 2017 and I didn't know the guy I fought in either case.

I am still afraid to do these fights but I get an adrenaline rush from them and that is why I do it. My youngest cage fights in real life but these dreams started long before she began. I guess we will see how far this goes.

It looks to me that this years battles will take place in a remote area near the Sycan river. I recognize the area but not the entrance.

No dreams last night but they will come as always do. This is the gathering. The battles will come soon.

I suppose you could liken it to Fight Club if you have ever seen that movie but there are some similarities and huge differences.
Similarities:
Sundowner is not advertised, or spoken of. The participants and spectators know when, where and why they are there. There is no mistake and nothing is haphazard.

Differences:
We don't pick fights or ask someone to beat us up to prove a point. This is a gathering to see who is ready for the upcoming brutal winter and who will be the providers for the upcoming seasons. It is a spiritual event and everyone knows that.
When a man is beaten, the fighting stops. there is no need for blood to flow for reasons of revenge or spite. Each participant has one and only one fight per year and this is it.
If you fight for any other reason during the year (even with your spouse) you are disqualified from the event. The honor system rules and if you lie about it, it will show after you are matched. Nobody has so far because this is a right of passage of gentlemen and women of the highest quality. I would venture to say that nobody that participates in these battles or is a witness to them will ever break the rules.

All of us have special talents in our dreams and that is why we gather here. The difference is that we all know better to use these talents against each other during this event. We choose, by choice to use mortal rules and daily values as it is a much better compass of who we are and how we measure up to each other. All of the participants and spectators are of the best qualities in all people. I stand proud of that.

The gathering is complete. There will be no women fighting this year. The bouts will begin at sunset tomorrow and will last through the weekend. There will be 21 bouts. I drew 12 this year meaning that I will be fighting around 1 AM Sunday morning.

I am very nervous this year because i see a lot of people I don't know and I have not had the chance to visit with To be honest, It feels like there are a lot of infiltrators here and some of them look like professional fighters. I suppose that shouldn't matter but it still worries me and I have made that clear.

The mat is already set up and everyone has seen it. It is an elevated platform 24 X 24. Covered in white canvas with no padding on the plywood platform underneath. There are beams for overhead lighting all around the mat. There are no ropes at all. There are some mean looking people here this year. I hope that those of us that started this can keep it clean.
