November 5th Guy Fawkes Night.
November 5th Guy Fawkes Night. Guy Fawkes Night is annually held November 5. It is sometimes known as Bonfire Night and marks the anniversary of the discovery of a plot organized by Catholic conspirators to blow the Houses of Parliament in London in 05. Many people light bonfires and set off fireworks, and in some cases burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes the lead conspirator on the Bonfire. Usually these days the majority of these are large organised events, and the Firework displays can be quite awesome. This is primarily a British Celebration, but also celebrated in some of the Commonwealth Countries. When I first moved to Germany to work in September 2000, in the beginning I travelled there alone. After several weeks, I had acquired an apartment and furnished it, so I travelled back to the UK to bring my wife to visit. Our flight left Manchester Airport at around 8.30pm on November 5th, on the ground we could see Bonfires and the occasional burst of colour from fireworks. An hour and a half later we were coming in to land in Hamburg (pm local time), my wife looked out of the window and asked me "Where are the Bonfires?" I had explain her that Germans didn't celebrate Guy Fawkes Night! Dohh Please visit my Blog "Older but no Wiser" |

i grew up on another coast... but the beach was the entire county and all the adjoining counties. here we have barrier islands. so not a lot of beach. when i was a teen we would go for the US 4th of July and sit on the beach. the local towns all coordinated so they set off one after each other to light up the entire county coast line. now it's a lot of hassle to get parking and drive home. but that is a fond memory.
