Rum 蘭姆酒
Rum 蘭姆酒 Ah, good ol' rum. Nectar of the gods. Elixir of our sweetest dreams. Quencher of the vile flame of parchedness. Easily the most underrepresented liquor in Taiwan, rum has had a struggle to get noticed among all the scotch, cognac, bourbon, vodka, etc. And, to a certain extent, with good reason. The rum industry does have a problem with purity--what with the added sugar, color, and other "flavor enhancers". However, when you do find a good, genuine, authentic rum for sipping neat, it is a treasure on par with any other liquor. The hard part is finding one in Taiwan. What's most unfortunate is that rum is so versatile and has such broad appeal. It can be either light, gold, or dark (aged). It can be enjoyed straight or in a cocktail--both hot and cold. It is enjoyed equally by both men and women. Here are some good ones that are available in Taiwan: Light (for mixing): - Cruzan Aged Rum - Matusalem Platino Gold & Dark (for mixing): - Havana Club 7 - Blackwell - Appleton 12 Gold & Dark (for sipping neat): - R.L. Seale's 10 - La Hechicera - Mount Gay Black Barrell You'll notice there's no Bacardi or Angostura listed there. So, next time you're out on the town, see if you can find a place that serves one of the above and give rum a try. You may still enjoy your Scotch whisky or red/white wine more, but it's nice to have something different every once in a while. (I feel obligated to remind people to drink in moderation, obey the legal age for drinking in your area, never drink and drive, and that pregnant women should avoid alcohol.) |
