A McKuen Poem...

A McKuen Poem...

I've often said here, Rod McKuen is my favorite writer. And without looking very hard, you can tell he has influenced the way I write and also the style. I make no apologies for that. The words flow better for me I think, than in a rigid form that most think poetry should be.

After I've read something of his, I usually won't write anything for several days. That's to make sure I won't accidentally copy any of his thoughts.

This is one of Mr. McKuen's poems below... and one of many of my favorites. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. (If you would like to read more of Rod McKuen's work... it can be found.)

FOURTEEN
by Rod McKuen

How can we be sure of anything
the tide changes.
The wind that made the grain wave gently yesterday
blows down the trees tomorrow.
And the sea sends sailors crashing on the rocks,
as easily as it guides them safely home.
I love the sea
but it doesn't make me less afraid of it
I love you
but I'm not always sure of what you are
and how you feel.

I'd like to crawl behind your eyes
and see me the way you do
or climb through your mouth
and sit on every word that comes up through your
throat.

Maybe I could be sure then
maybe I could know
as it is - I hide beneath your frowns
or worry when you laugh too loud.
Always sure a storm is rising.

- from "Listen to the Warm," 1967

Yep, anyone can find more, it's just a google away... All I have to do though is walk over to my bookcase... you are a man of good taste, my friend...

I can't say that he is my only favorite because I have learned to love a wide variety of poets over the years, but Rod is where I started... perhaps you can see his influence in my style also?

Thanks for reminding me of my roots... 143

This one is a favorite of mine as well. It says alot though doesn't it?

Your writing is truly better though......and I really mean that. Somehow, you are just able to reach in and connect with people's hearts.....and that is your gift my friend. 143....always.

Flinky... Four steps away from where I'm sitting I can pull up several of his books... all worn with time and each page shows that it's been read over and over. (Many have notations out to the side in ink!) Reaching down from there is an album, so badly scratched through play that it takes a nickel on the stylus to make it play without getting stuck. They are only a few of the ones I once had. (A friend borrowed one and never returned it... another, an ex friend took and destroyed. Still another, somehow became lost through one too many moves. I thought I had them all safely tucked away.)

Yes, I can see his style in your writing, also. But I also see something else that must be uniquely yours. It's always an easy journey for me to read "you..." and it's always a pleasure. 143,2... sweet one, me

Sexy... I think you will find "A safe place to land" and his daily flight plan is well worth looking into. I'm sure you will enjoy it. And don't forget his archives either. (Look hard enough, and you'll actually see me in there, also!) Thank you for telling me that I'm doing well with mine. That makes it all worthwhile. Soft hug, me

Angel... You come here and immediately swell my head, darlin'! I can't imagine my work is better. Sorry, I just can't do that.

I used to dream that Rod and I could sit and talk together, and I could learn from the master. (We have actually had a few short emails between us. I was shocked that he replied the first time. I asked him if he replied to all of his emails... and he said, "only the ones I find interesting.") LOL! He has a habit of changing his email address on a regular basis! I guess that way he doesn't have to put up with too much clutter from all his fans.

That my dear friend, is truly a very high compliment. Thank you.
wlfaf... and always 143, me

I've never had any of his music, but I remember him being on talk shows and singing... probably on Mike Douglas... loved, loved, loved "Jean"... have you read "Finding My Father"...

Becky... Your knowledge of Mr. McKuen's work goes without question. And the ones you named are indeed timeless pieces. (His children, as he calls his poems. I know what he means by that.)

No, I don't have more than the Master; but I will continue to try to be as good as I can be. In today's world, it is becoming more and more difficult to get published; but that is still my goal.

What makes you think I don't sing? LOL!

I sing all the time! It's just that my dog barks and the paint on the wall starts coming down when I do. But I still sing, with my heart and a voice only a parent could love. (Actually, that's not true either. My dad often looked at me in total shock when I sang. LOL!!!)

I'm a tenor, and my range used to be pretty good. I could hit the high notes; but always felt more comfortable with the middle and lower end of the scale. An untrained voice destined to always be kept quiet and in the background of any choir. Have a brilliant weekend... me
