Piling stones...
Piling stones... Have you noticed the pictures over the last several years of people in their media or on dating sites etc. showing them standing next to these piles of stones somewhere out in a wonderful nature setting? I'm puzzled. Why do people feel the need to go out into a natural setting that has an abundance of natural beauty and stack a pile of rocks or stones? Do they think they are adding to the beauty of the scene? Collecting the naturally placed rocks and stones into an unnatural pile that is clearly man made. Now I suppose some of the pictures are from people who came upon these unnatural formations and just thought "wow look this pile of stones that someone made here, isn't it beautiful, so artistic." "Isn't it cool." "Some stranger just came here and chose to pile these stones up in such a cool interesting stack like this and then leave it here just for me or people to come by and find it." "Look at the cool way they stacked them balancing them in the pile on one another in such a way, it's just amazing." Is it their artistic streak? Their need to add to the beauty of nature? Or is it their need to say look at me, look at what I did, see, I was here? What do you think about these piles of stones seen about unnaturerally in nature? Are they an addition or a distraction? Is it an abuse in a national park to do something such as pile stones up in an unnatural stack? Should people limit there stone piling to private or even public (with permission) gardens? What would you think about someone choosing to take the stone piles they came across out in nature and put them back in their natural state...scattered about as they once were? Vive La Difference |

I kind of like the way it looks.... Not quite sure why, but I do. Vive La Difference

There's a World Championship of Stone Stacking, the European leg is held in Dunbar, just 20 miles doon the road from me McTick. Apparently they have a variety of categories from highest to most creative. I actually quite like them when they're on a beach. And the sea/nature will work its magic and restore them to their natural condition. I kinda get annoyed when I see them inland, they kinda spoil the natural beauty. Two asides: There's a wee hill in County Mayo where people raise small stone stacks in remembrance of loved ones, can't for the life of me remember the name of it. But it's a lovely spot over looking the sea, very peaceful. For centuries in Scotland we've been raising cairns, piles of stones, to guide people across mountains, particularly useful in snowy or low visibility conditions. They are often shaped in a way which can provide some shelter. And just to finish, in answer to your last question, I'd put them back....... Vive La Difference
