My Happiness is Paramount. The title is a statement that has ended a few of my relationships in my late 20s and early 30s. The latest instance of it was nearly 2 weeks ago. I met someone in Farmington and we hit it off right away. We spent the whole weekend together acting like teenagers, the sex was great. Then Monday rolls around and I have to go back to work, but we text throughout the day. That evening, she goes silent. No big deal, she has so she's taking care of them I thought. Tuesday morning comes and she tells me she hooked up the night before with a guy she's had a crush on since forever. I'm cool with it, we've made no commitment to being exclusive. Then she tells me that she's going to start dating him and if I could keep myself available just in case it doesn't work out. I said "no promises." "Why not?" "Because my happiness is paramount." "What does that mean?" "It means sitting around waiting for you won't make me happy, it'll make me hate you the longer you take." "Can we at least be friends?" "No, that won't make me happy either." "Why?" "Because I'm always going to remember you for the sex, not being a friend. It'll only get you in trouble with your boyfriend." "Well fine, I was going to say I'd give you first shot at me if this doesn't work out but now I'm not." "Meh, I'm sure I'll survive." "Whatever, leave me alone." |
