 I don't have problem launching the IM here and chat with any one but had heard of quite some members having issues.
Lots of reason to each why you might not get reply.
Some I can think of are, like you said they are fakes, Some maybe only chat to their network friends, Some maybe picky to who to chat to,some maybe only can chat to one or maybe 2 and would ignore any on coming IM message. Could be some more reason.

 A F F seems to have blocked me on I M because we tried to exchange e mail info. now I can't seem to get any messages from her .
