A Touch of Humor (or The Cold War of Words)

Oh, the Daily Mail. What would we do for mindless amusement without them.

The Russian Deputy Prime Minister has chosen to forgo the war of words (perhaps not his strongest suit) and lead with quips about old pictures and the masculinity or lack thereof regarding presidents Putin and Obama. Let the games begin.

On twitter, the DPM posted a comment about the two presidents having different values and allies. The picture of Putin was with a leopard in a wildlife facility outside of Sochi around the time of the Winter Olympics. The picture of Obama was with a white poodle, during his run for the senate seat he held in Illinois. Putin looked at ease and friendly. Obama looked smug and elitist.

My own take on the pictures, and the additional ones that the Daily Mail provided for our amusement, follows.

Regarding Russian President Putin

Looking calm and at ease with a specimen of a wild animal that has been domesticated through captivity doesn't make you seem masculine. Saving a wild animal from a more ferocious wild animal intent on killing it (say, a salmon in the grips of a black bear) would be masculine (not holding my breath on that one).

Men with burgeoning bosoms should not take topless pictures. It isn't masculine. Enough said.

Taking a topless picture on horseback, in a western saddle does not make you seem masculine Forgo the saddle and, if nudity is a must, the pants. THAT says masculine. (Or stupid. Sometimes the line between them is fine.)

The Daily Mail included a picture of Putin with the puppy that he was presented. Putin managed to look friendly, compassionate, and disarmingly adorable with the pup. Definitely a lover (but not in that bad way...)

Regarding US President Obama

Taking a picture with a white poodle isn't effeminate. Looking like you are posing for the Westminster show in the picture though you aren't? Priceless. breeder, not lover.

Obama's best, not-a-man-of-the-people picture is from a ground breaking ceremony. I still cringe and laugh at that one. Certainly a missed opportunity for the Russian Deputy Prime Minister to tweet. I'm sure they could dig up a building pic of Putin that would make it a starker comparison.

But you must love the quien es mas macho bullshit that is international politics. Wait. We have the same thing at home....

I will endeavor to include the picture of the ground breaking ceremony. I never know how long those will stay attached, though. Some have proprietary codes and such. Fingers crossed it stays. Cringe and laugh with me.

A good amount of Putin's pictures look like hes about to walk away from an explosion. Like one of those bad 80's movies, that Arnold starred during his hay day.
