“A Date Which Will Live in Infamy”:

On December 7, 1941 an event occurred that changed history. This post is not a political commentary, just posted as a remembrance of those brave men and woman that paid the ultimate price that day. Never should their sacrifice be forgotten.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt: Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our secretary of state a formal reply to a recent American message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday the Japanese government also launched as attack against Malaya.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Wake Island.

And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As commander in chief of the Army and Navy I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. . .

Yes at the time it was an act of Infamy....but as time marches on it becomes less and less Infamous; new atrocious acts come upon the United States of America and they become a new Infamy. 9-11 Terrorist Attack across the Eastern U.S. became the new Infamous act. With any thing that happened in the past, after some time has passed, it moves into history and it becomes something to you read about. The people who lived through the Infamy have died. All we have left is historical views and analysis. I am a history buff, and I loved the study of the events that led up to WWII and the ending of that war. I remember. But, I am part Japanese American, and my thoughts are for those who lost their lives defending the United States. I served as Officer in the United States Army, and I will always remember the soldier, sailor, airman, and marines who defend the United States. I hope their will be no more Infamous acts in our future. For those men in service, I pray for your safety and God speed home!

Not that it would have mattered, Japan would have attacked anyway but the U.S. cut oil imports into Japan. Japan did not have any crude oil and went in search for oil through conquest in the South Pacific. Japan was preparing for war for years building a huge naval force, and air force, contrary to WW1 treat and agreements. Their battleships were the biggest in the world, larger than Germany's, with 18" and 20" guns where ours had 16" guns.

Fortunately all our carriers were at sea durng the Pearl attack and Japan mistakenly did not do a 2nd and 3rd hit which would have given Pearl to Japan. Where would we have been without Pearl?

All our battleships at the time were WWI. WE had no new battleships and the major desing battleship, the Iowa class, were all made as a result of Pearl. The Missouri, New Jersey, others, were all Iowa class battleships.

The New Jersey was designated to be the battleship for the surrender in Tokyo Bay however Truman being from Missouri, switched ships to the Missouri.

WWII made us the nation we are today. We had a small military prior to Pearl.

I've never fully understand why Japan attacked Pearl Harbour to bring the US into the war against them.

I have to admit, being a non-American, I don't recall ever being aware of the full text of Roosevelt's address to the nation.

I had absolutely no idea of what had taken place "behind the scenes", via American and Japanese diplomats. I also had no idea that so many other attacks were taking place simultaneously.

I also will not make this a political rant, but what I am learning, as an adult, about the Japanese during that time has really opened my eyes. Thank you for your part in that endeavour.
