 Things vary depending on the lady and her mood. Often, it is just a few slaps on the ass with my hand while doggie, raising a bit of a red mark.
Other time, using a paddle to make her ass really red and stinging, sometimes followed by lotion or oil. And then there is the flogger, used just so on the ass, thighs and breasts.
But, in all of this, first you have to know what you are doing and second (and most important), she has to know what she wants and what her tolerance levels are.?*
