Junior lifeguard
Junior lifeguard Memories. Did I ever tell you about why I did not become a Junior lifeguard? Well it is quite a story. The first day we met a senior lifeguard tells us the most important point about being a lifeguard. Seems when people are drowning they panic and have this incredible strength from adrenaline. Their instinct is to grab the lifeguard in a bear hug and you both sink to the bottom of the pool and die. The first and most important rule is to not let that happen. So you have to extend a pole to them, or a towel or a plastic float so they can grab that. Or you swim behind them and grab them by the throat in a half nelson and do the side stroke to the edge of the pool. The thought of being drowned by some paniced person you were trying to help was too much. I concluded it was not a good deal to risk my life for a few dollars an hour. Yes I know I should have cared more about a stranger dying. But I was not that brave. I do admire those who are willing to risk it, but I do not wish to join them. That is why I am here to tell the tale about why I did not become a lifeguard. |
