A parable from my youth:

I was considering junior lifeguard class. The first lesson made a big impression.

The Senior lifeguard said those who are drowning panic and have adrenaline. They usually try to hug the lifeguard and both sink down and drown. So approach from behind, grab them around the neck and use sidestroke to pull them from the pool.

I decided too dangerous for me, so I did get the idea of self preservation by not becoming a lifeguard. In Baywatch they used a float which is a better idea.

So do not let the other person drown you...
