Medicare for all

Bernie Sanders appeals to the lefties with his push to expand Medicare for everyone, without deductibles or co-pays. As Europe, and Canada have. The US should have done that in 1948 as the UK did. But we chose another path. It may be too late to switch now.

Americans like the illusion of choice and not have the government tell you what you can have. Our system costs twice as much, we give trillions to health insurance companies, and we have worse results than most other developed countries.

Still, when Democrats controlled both houses of Congress, with a Democrat President, we could not vote in single payer healthcare. Is there any reason to believe we can get Medicare for all now, when we could not get the public option for those 55 to 65 in 2009?

I prefer Hilary Clinton's pragmatic approach.

In my view, we need to expand Medicaid to all 50 states as soon as possible. Increase the Federal gas tax and tax natural gas and coal to pay for all Medicaid costs 100% by the Federal government. We can cut use of fossil fuels and remove the burden on states and local government to pay for poor who need medical care.

Less fossil fuels burnt is going to happen if we want a habitable planet. Might as well speed up the process with tax incentives and pay for medical care for the poor.

Many places have Medicare for all, but we have an entrenched system in the US that would be hard to change.
