Libertarian? No...

I understand the surface appeal of a Libertarian philosophy. Many dumb regulations and laws are seriously annoying. The current crop of politicians does not inspire confidence in the democratic form of governance.

I am fine with a libertarian bias as long as people obey the rules. But what about when they don't?

Take murder. Most people disapprove of murder, although there are some situations I would be willing to make exceptions...

Still, without laws against murder, and taxes to support courts and prisons, you would just have people saying mean things to shame the killer with no effective sanctions. Then you would have private vengeance and reprisals, leading to Hatfield and McCoy blood feuds. Like the gang battles plaguing Central America. Or Romeo and Juliet.

How do Libertarians solve global warming? Inaction will lead to killing off many species, raising sea levels and destroying food supplies. Do we want humans to become an endangered specie?

While I think marijuana should be legalized, what about heroin, cocaine, meth amphetamine and other addictive drugs?

Do we want to let people not hire others based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or ethnicity? You need a government and law to prevent bigotry in practice. People may still be bigots but not allowed to express it by depriving others of their rights.

Do we want air bags, traction control, abs brakes, seat belts, tire pressure monitoring systems and crumple zones in cars? The car companies fought all these innovations until forced to introduce them. Backup cameras are still not found on many cars. No regulations means more deaths from unsafe cars.

How about sewers and safe drinking water. Without laws you get the unclean water found in Africa and Asia. Sound good?

How about food safety? Care to trade the FDA and Agriculture Dept. food inspections for the less restrictive system in China? Libertarian food safety does not sound like an advance.

What about public schooling? Without laws and taxes who gets educated? Only the rich.

What about Social Security and Medicare? Without them many old people rely only on private charity. Dickens wrote about the poverty and neglect that caused. Care for a return to beggars living on the street? We already have homeless, do we want millions more?

How do Libertarians deal with national security threats? What was the Libertarian response to the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor? Or the more recent Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and fourth plane headed to Washington DC? Without laws and taxes how do you protect the US population from foreign aggression? Do you trust the Russians and Chinese to just be nice? I don't.
