Very bad behavior

Teenagers can be trouble. I had my fair share of aggravation and frustration with my teenaged , but we both survived to outlive that stage. Many are not so lucky.

But I digress. I have to share the latest sad story I heard as a warning.

is 16 and likes to steal the family car to joyride with friends. Even though mom locks up the keys, he finds a way into the lockbox by stealing the key to the lockbox! A combo lock would have been better. Or carrying the key on a chain attached to her body...

So drives the car with three others late at night. Crashes car into seven other parked cars. has no license, no insurance, and is specifically excluded from the policy. Which means the insurance company is not obligated to pay for their car or the damage to the other cars.

Mom's car worth $30,000 is totaled. Other cars will cost about another $30,000. The owner is responsible for up to $15,000 of damages if the car is loaned to someone, but not if stolen. They can report the car stolen, but then can go to juvenile incarceration... Damaged car owners can sue...

can go bankrupt, parents can defend lawsuits on their own... Hiring a lawyer to fight lawsuits is very expensive.

Looks like parents will pay for all the car damage, losing about $60,000 in net worth. If there was bodily injury the cost would have been much worse...

I would say to sonny: We just lost $60,000 of net worth due to your criminal acts and stupidity. I intended to use that money to pay for an expensive college education for you. Now we do not have that money. You can go to the local community college for two years. Then if you perform well, you can transfer to a UC or a State College. If you do any more damage to our family you can get out and see how nice the world is to an uneducated idiot ...

Beware the joyriding idiot excluded .
