Healthcare reform law

The US Supreme Court starts to hear arguments about the Healthcare reform law. The individual mandate to buy health insurance or pay a tax is the key issue debated.

My view is that the Federal Government can require health insurance. Every state requires car drivers to carry liability insurance. The Federal Government could draft men to risk death or serious injury to fight in Vietnam, Korea, WWII, WWI and the earlier wars. Buying health insurance is much less burdensome.

The Federal government taxes growing marijuana, and bans numerous unsafe drugs and devices. The Feds tax your income so why can't they tax your failure to provide for health insurance? If you go to a hospital emergency room for treatment they have to treat you, and if you do not pay the other people pick up the expense. Why is it fair to force other people to pay for your healthcare?

The healthcare reform law requires insurance companies to accept you even if you have cancer or aids or other pre-existing medical problems. Many people would wait to buy insurance until they were sick making the premiums very expensive. The only sensible way to pay for health insurance is if everyone, well or sick, is paying in to support the cost of treating the sick ones.

If you don't want to pay for health insurance then you should agree to not use health care if you are sick and dying. So you just die when you have a heart attack, stroke or cancer. If that is ok then you don't have to buy health insurance. Are we willing to watch people just die and refuse to treat them? Are you willing to give up any health care if you refuse to buy medical insurance? If you don't pay, then you are forcing someone else to pay for you. How is that fair to be a free rider and cheat the system for your benefit, but hurt everyone else?
