Termite damage
Termite damage Gahh, today I decided to prise off a rotted window edge board and replace it. When I did this I was alarmed to find the old wood crumbling away and the wood behind was well eaten by termites. Gahh I suspected as much and we killed off the infestation with pesticide and removing the source of water they were using. However the damage is done and I had quite a bit of woodwork to do. They'd eaten the edge of a windowledge so I cut out the affected area and filled it with the end of a tin of fiberglass resin I've been using on other projects. That should hold it until I have the time and money to replace the plasterboard, windowledge, battons and the insulation. In future I'm going to consider re-designing to discourage termites without having to use dangerous pesticides. Don't ever give up searching for the fun in life. |

Jeff.....Fingers crossed. I've noticed that it's a constant battle with nature in this country. In the UK they don't have termites....yet. However there is usually a failed damp-course to deal with in old brick-built houses. Don't ever give up searching for the fun in life.

Termites love wet areas. They're a pain in the ass. Are there any pesticide cakes you can get to stick in the walls to kill them before they do unseen damage, should they return? I know they put this boric acid gel in walls to kill cockroaches before they can get into the rest of the house.

MissAnn....Hmmmm, I've seen the Boric acid in loads of local shops. Perhaps we'll give it a shot. We're also going to improve the air flow in the cavities and improve the insulation and throw in a shed load of concrete and traps for good measure. Don't ever give up searching for the fun in life.
