Resolutions

I resolve to break my resolutions early! Just kidding; I don’t actually make New Year Resolutions but I do resolve at various times of the year when I feel it necessary. But New Year Resolutions are all a part of the celebration.

Ringing in the New Year isn’t a modern idea but one started by the Babylonians some 4,000 years ago when they celebrated the, New Year, with an 11 day festival that began in March. In 46 B.C., Roman emperor Julius Caesar moved the first day of the year to January 1 in honor of the Roman god of beginnings, Janus; however, this concept didn’t really catch on until 1582 when Pope Gregory XIII brought it into fashion with the Gregorian calendar.

The idea of making New Year’s Resolutions also rests with the Babylonians, who made promises to the gods in hopes they’d earn good favor in the coming year. They often resolved to get out of debt, which is a resolution definitely worth considering. In medieval times, knights took the “peacock vow” to reaffirm their commitment to chivalry. Modern day resolutions are many to include: quitting smoking, exercising more, eating better, volunteering, spending more time with loved ones, becoming more spiritual and the list goes on.

Whatever the resolution; the facts of the matter is that we often fail in being resolute. In a 2007 study conducted by Richard Wiseman 88 percent of those who make New Year Resolutions fail at keeping them. So maybe we should add another resolution to the list by being resolved to be more resolute in our resolutions.
