Shardenfreud...you know you really shouldn't but just can't help yourself. I heard this word used recently by somebody who either had no idea what it meant, or maybe just used the wrong word for the context. It's a German word meaning "taking pleasure in others misery". To put it simply, it's those "Funniest home video" moments. You know...a 's birthday party...a treat-filled pinata swinging in the breeze...a blindfolded with a baseball bat...a Dad standing too close, and the scene is set. You can see what is going to happen...the swings and BAM...Dad cops the bat right in the "Jatz crackers"! Dad is doubled over in agony and you simply can't help but laugh! Now call it coincidence, but a couple of days later I received an email with a video attachment...you know...the type that get mass-mailed about the place. I had a look at this particular one and have to say I was just about wetting myself by the time the vid was only half way through. I knew it was going to end badly, I knew the was going to get hurt, I couldn't believe how stupid it was, and I knew why I was glad that fireworks are banned to the general public in this country! I challenge you to make the effort to watch this video and tell me whether or not you could help laughing! Here is what you will have to do...go to a website ebaumsworld (with the usuals dubs and dot com) and open any video. In the address bar the site url will include a 6 digit number...substitute 868627 for this number and press enter! While you are there, you might as well have a look and laugh at 922438. In 822690 the only thing that gets hurt is her pride...except maybe for his back as I think he'll be sleeping on the couch for a few weeks, but it is still as funny as hell! |

I think it's the "stupid" factor that makes it OK to laugh. I don't see anything funny about little kids being put onto a bike to learn to ride in the middle of an obstacle course, and then slamming into something. Those parents need a cuff up the side of the head for failing in their duty of care...not a financial reward for supplying a "funny" video. People that are old enough to know better, doing something totally stupid, with disatrous consequences is completely different...I'll wet myself laughing all day at idiots playing stupidly.

The spider drawing is a classic isn't it! He was nothing if not persistent! And what can you say about the old sleeve down the pants idea...devastatingly clever! I got trapped in that site for nearly 3 hours the first time I went to it. I wonder if kids have always been that "stupid", and it's just now that we can see it because they all have phones with video cameras in them.
