GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

I'm going to rant for just a minute....and then I'll be over it!

Yesterday's mail brought an EOB from Anthem BCBS. An EOB is an Explanation of Benefits. I've been anxious to see what the cost of my surgery was. So, on the EOB it showed that the cost of my surgery was just over $21,000.00. Now that doesn't include the anesthesiology...or the surgeon's fees. Just the hospital portion. Yikes!

Want to know how much my lovely, expensive insurance paid????? Almost $2,000.00! Thats right! I didn't forget any zeros. They wrote off more than $19,000.00 because the hospital I was in was a "provider". Now, I know that the hospital is under contract with BCBS...and money changes hands there....but this is ridiculous.

I'm in the medical field...and the only way to get insurance companies to pay more is to keep raising the price of the services offered! Where does this leave the people without insurance???? I'd have to say it leaves them bankrupt! Okay....rant over!

It's a beautiful day here in Virginia....and I'm going to go out and relax in the sunshine.

Oh! My "share" of the cost of this surgery is probably going to be less than $300.00 once the secondary insurance picks up some too.

Just so no one misunderstands......I am massively grateful that we have insurance! And that they take care of most of the bill. But, speaking from the medical side of the field....I am worried about what the ever rising costs of medical care and medicine is going to do to the ones out there who have no insurance. Thats all! Love you guys!

We are the richest civilization humans have ever created. But we can't seem to provide health care for everyone.

ANGEL ~ When I went home to my small town in Texas my income was severely limited because of the jobs I had to take in order to transport my sons to/from their school. I had to wait nearly six months to get insurance for all of us, and the boys were on Medicaid. That was the FIRST TIME in my adult working life that I did not have full medical coverage for either myself or my children. I have never felt like such a second-class citizen in my life.

That experience opened my eyes to a lot of things ... But one of the most important was it sucks to be a person without the ability to have proper, full medical care in this country (and I WORKED in an Emergency Room).

*rant over with you*

angel--The CEO of United Healthcare Systems, largest HMO in Minnesota, earned a package salary of 95 million dollars last year. I have no doubt he works hard. But......seriously?

I work with people with disabilities who are on Medicare. Everytime I get on the phone with an insurance agency to help someone who has been asked to pay full cost for their Rx's because their profile gotten lost in the Medicare Part D shuffle, I am reminded how broken the US Health Care system really is.

grrrrr...now I need to go outside....Meer

angelofmercy5 replies on 5/28/2006 9:08 am:
Meer....this is just a travesty! I'm sure that CEO works hard too...but NOT that hard! And most of his work is political...you can bet on it. Working with those folks on medicare/medicaid is heartbreaking sometimes....and frustrating. Now....we've ranted...go and enjoy your day sweetie!

It amazes me how much of a discount insurance companies get. If they charged somewhere close to that for everyone then they might not have as many charge offs.

Just another reason why I love it here in Manitoba Canada. Medical like that, all necessary surgeries are completely covered. Only elective surgeries the patient needs to pay for! And of course we pay to see the optometrists and dentists, can't forget those money grabbers. Not to mention the physiotherapists (although these are occasionally covered depending on reason for needing it), chiropractors & massage therapists! Of course specialists are covered as well.

Skyeone....it does seem that Canada has a grasp on some of this. But I do read that there are flaws in that system too. Although, I wonder if it isn't US insurance companies that want us to think that! Thank you for stopping by!

My quintuple bypass surgery last September (just over $71,000 plus other seperate providers as well) was paid mostly by Medicre and my secondary insurence covered the rest. There were some Meds that were not covered and I caught up on that cost in time (about a month ago). Hardest part of all is that thare still are some coverages that (I am still getting notices on even now) that are just now being paid.

What P***** me off the most is the fact that I only live just over 1 1/2 miles from the dispatch office and it takes 23 minutes for them to get here to my place, at the earliest. No charge coming over unless transported but the TWO BLOCKS, THAT IS NOT A TYPO, TWO BLOCKS IS CORRECT TWO to transport me to the ER would have cost $1,071.10. I can walk uphill to the ER in just over two minutes myself BUT I drove up there, collapsed in the ER and then when I woke up I got chewed out by the nurse but the Dr said If I had waited for the ambulence to arrive, they could have taken their time CAUSE I WOULD NOT HAVE LIVED BY THE TIME THEY GOT THERE.

The cost of ground my medivac to Olympia without siren (just under 40 miles) one way- was $2,035. Wonder what it would have been if they had used their siren?

Any one want a ride in a nice shiney red taxi? I think I am going to order one

One could say thank god for insurance, but then it's the insurance that makes it so expensive. As long as there's someone ready to pay whatever price they jack it up to, they'll keep jacking up the prices.

Think about how much that surgery cost. How much expertise, how many man-hours, how much the facility cost, etc. Now think about that in terms of a car. How much expertise is needed there. How many man-hours that takes. How much their facilities cost. Etc. It just doesn't seem right.

Not that doctors, nurses, etc. don't deserve to be paid well. Nor that hospitals deserve some money. But things have just gotten way out of control.

Vrec....you bring up a good point here about the way things are charged. It is way out of control.

If Canadas health care is so good why do so mant Canadians come to the States for important surgeries ? could it be the long wait or the lack of quality and sometimes both.....

A Somali arrives in Minneapolis as a new immigrant
to
the United States. He stops the first person he sees
walking down the street and says, "Thank you Mr.
American for letting me in this country, and giving
me
housing, food stamps, free medical care and free
education!"

But the passer-by says, "You are mistaken, I am a
Mexican."

The man goes on and encounters another passer-by.
"Thank you for having such a beautiful country here
in
America!" The person says, "I no American, I
Vietnamese."

The new arrival walks further, and the next person
he
sees he stops, shakes his hand and says "Thank you
for
the wonderful America!" That person puts up his hand
and says, "I am from Middle East, I am not an
American!"

He finally sees a nice lady and asks suspiciously,
"Are you an American?"

She says, "No, I am from Russia!"

So now he is totally puzzled, and asks her, "Where
are
all the Americans?"

The Russian lady looks at her watch, shrugs, and
says... "Probably at work!"

Hi angel,
As you are no doubt aware,we have the NHS ( National Health Service )here in the UK.
We contribute toward this ''free'' treatment from our taxes.
Always complaints,though not from me.
Probably biased as my wife is a nurse, see both sides.
Hope you are well...
K

angelofmercy5 replies on 5/28/2006 1:24 pm:
Westhill...if your wife is a nurse, then you probably do see both sides of it. And you probably get better care than some. I do have a friend in the UK whose Dad has been waiting about a year on a waiting list for bypass surgery. To me, as a nurse, that seems unacceptable. But they just take it in stride.

I stopped looking at the cost of my bike wreck when the bills hit $100K. Last I heard the total was just shy of $200K. And since nobody even looked for the guy that was trying to kill me, guess who's on the hook for the whole bill? And the real shame of it was since I didn't have anyone to blame it on I also didn't get any rehab for my ortho injuries. Today I have a severe disability in that I can't sit or stand for long periods or my lower leg swells and shuts down the leg from the knee down, but I can't get either a job or SSI disability. I can ride my bike 100 miles a day, but just sitting for a few hours will put me in bed for the rest of the day. As you might be able to tell I'm just a little pissed about this. I'll quit now...

Opus

angelofmercy5 replies on 5/28/2006 1:58 pm:
Opus...I guess I would be upset about this too! What I don't understand is that the cost of rehab is nothing compared to the cost of further surgery from not healing properly. I'm sorry to hear about all of this.

I recently had an MRI. It took less than 30 seconds to complete the procedute. I was in and out in less than 15 minutes. I just received a bill for over $1500 from the company who did the test, one from the hospital for $200 for who knows what, and another for $350 for some doctor who 'reviewed' the test. My insurance company, who pre-approved the test, paid -0-. I'm calling them on Tuedsay to raise some hell with them. WTF am I paying almost $700 per month for?

Oldude...my husband is retired military too. So, that is our secondary insurance. And if they have the meds at the Navy pharmacy...it costs us nothing except our time to get there. That part is great, isn't it?

HeartlessBitch69 54F

5/28/2006 6:38 pm

My Bill so far for my Dentist is $5,000 And you know how much BCBS paid? $0.00, none, nodda, zilch! And they have raised my husbands co-pay on his perscriptions to $25.00 And thats for generic. His med was only $28.00. So for the hundreds of dollars we pay a month for our insurance they have paid $3.00 of any medical exspences we have had! I am lucky I have an awsome dentist. I signed up for the insurance he has in his office and the day I signed up for it 1/2 my $5,000 bill was taken care of. And 1/2 of the next $2,500 I have to pay will be taken care of as well. We are not even sending any claims to BCBS, and we wanted to cancell it, but we can't til open enrollment in september. So we will cont. to pay hundreds for an insurance every month that we can't really use. Well except for the $3.00 a month they save us on meds! BCBS sucks ass!

angelofmercy5 replies on 5/28/2006 8:21 pm:

It's outrageous, isn't it? I noticed the same thing when I had surgery a couple years ago and more recently when J had his motorcycle accident.

I don't know what people without ins do, they almost have to sign there life away to the hospitals!!!

There has to be a better way!

angelofmercy5 replies on 5/28/2006 8:25 pm:
Mycin...I know...they do have to sign their life away. Being a nurse...it kind of makes me sick that we can't do something differently. But it seems that everyone is at the mercy of the major insurance companies.
