People and pets It is quite a phenomenon (at least to me) that some men are turning away from female human company in favor of their dogs’. I am sure the same can be said of women and their animals. In the last few years I have met gentlemen who have placed their dogs on such a high pedestal that their houses are actually houses: toys all over, dishes in a place of prominence, beds placed where people might enjoy being, first greeting in the morning….. you guessed it.. to the dogs, playful large dogs who jump enthusiastically (and damagingly) up on the guest (me, I have scratch scars that are quite extraordinary!), yards covered with dog, ahem, leavings and the other side of the bed reserved for a dog (I have recently encountered three men who insisted I make room for the beloved on the bed. I probably don’t need to tell you that I didn’t stay or sleep with them and that was the last time I saw them). Perhaps I have the problem of choosing men who invest all their emotional time and energy in their dogs. I may have to examine that. I get it, I do; dogs are simply there for you utterly and devotedly. Yes, I get it. It’s hard to compete with that, especially when you are put in the position of having to compete with that. I have a girlfriend who finally put on a collar and met her husband after a business trip on her knees and naked with his beloved dogs and still he greeted them first. One of my worst experiences in this regard was moving in with a man who had quite a houseful of dogs, thanks to his ex-wife, and I had a cat. Well, when his Sharpei (sp?) killed my cat, guess which earthling he chose to continue living with? Well, Sharpeis are a fighting animal and this one was considerably aggressive. I’m not happy to say it was eventually euthanized for attacking a small boy who lived next door, but I think Miss Kitty rests a little more peacefully. I do not own any pets. So, I would suggest that you decide your priorities with your pets with regard to human company. I know it’s difficult; if it weren’t, there wouldn’t be so many men making this choice. A choice it is and if you are truly interested in adding a human to your household; well, take a little inventory and decide if that is truly what you want. |

I wasn't aware that men were doing the same thing. I have come to the point where I am hesitant to be with a woman who has a dog. Particularly on the dating sites. I know a dog can be great company, but as a man, I just don't want to be competing with the dog for a woman's attention. Yes, they are uncomplicated, but that is not necessarily living life. So, I agree and sympathize concerning the issue of dogs and attachment issues. Mind you, I like dogs (cats a bit more). Interesting post. Makes me feel less like I was being unreasonable.
