The Garden

Peaches and I recently went to the Rush concert here in Edmonton. First time I had ever seen Rush, although a long time fan. Peaches was struck by how much music a band of only three members could make. They have not lost a step, and they were on top of their game. Great sound, brilliant use of light and stage set, innovative use of video. Neil Peart - best drummer in rock ever...

We haven't bought the CD for Clockwork Angels, but Rush played the song The Garden late in their show, this lush, deep, layered, nuanced, kaleidoscope symphony of sound and thought and melody. Guitars and keyboards and Neil a perpetual motion whirlwind of arms and drumsticks and percussion...

The Garden is on my Nano now, and on my workout run today it finally came up on my shuffle for the first time... I was already on my cool down but I was lifted to a surreal plateau of endorphins and back to running... I floated in a cascade of falling flowers and existential philosophy and considered the depths of this human experience... Muscles, sinews, mind, metaphysical all in sync...

I don't think I ran, I think I flew... My apologies to the poor earthbound souls who shared the track...

The Garden

(from the album Clockwork Angels, by Rush)

In this one of many possible worlds
All for the best, or some bizarre test
It is what it is and whatever
Time is still the infinite jest

The arrow flies when you dream
The hours tick away
The cells tick away

The Watchmaker keeps to his schemes
The hours tick away
They tick away

CHORUS
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect
So hard to earn, so easily burned
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect
So hard to earn, so easily burned
In the fullness of time
A garden to nurture and protect

VERSE
In the rise and the set of the sun
To the stars goes spinning
Spinning 'round the night
Oh it is what it is and forever
Each moment of memory aflight
The arrow flies while you dream
The hours tick away
The cells tick away
The Watchmaker has time up his sleeve
The hours tick away
They tick away

CHORUS
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect
So hard to earn, so easily burned
In the fullness of time
A garden to nurture and protect
(Its a measure of a life)
The treasure of a life is a measure of love and respect
The way you live,
The gifts that you give
And the fullness of time is the only return that you expect

OUTRO
In the fullness of time a garden to nurture and protect
(Its a measure of a life)

It's a measure of a life

I`ve always loved Rush. You`re right Neil is indeed the best Rock drummer ever, his solo on the Show of Hands album is simply inspired.
