Believing in Fate vs Being Proactive

Here is a topic I have often wondered about. Is our lives predetermined already or is it what we make of it? I always thought that life is what we make of it. My philosophy was to take charge, control your destiny make the right choices and learn from your mistakes, but do things happen to us that are already predetermined. Do you believe in "Fate"?

Have you ever witnessed an accident on the highway that just occurred maybe 5 or 10 minutes ago and you say to yourself "wow I was lucky, if I would have left the house on time, I might have been involved in that accident"? Do you think it was meant to be or you could have controlled that situation?

Here is another thought regarding fate vs pro-activeness with relationships. Do you think there is a person out there that is your soul mate, just waiting to be found? You walk around the corner and you bump into someone or you sit at a cafe and you see a person that you feel you knew or connected with before. Maybe someone randomly sends you an email out of the blue. Do you answer the email or do you let it pass? Is life based on our decisions we make and then it opens a series of doors or opportunities and then we make choices and decisions that again opens more options? The options that we confront are based on the decisions we make in life or is it all predetermined?

I know I am asking a lot of questions, but I am curious as to your thoughts. I promise to be good with responding to your comments. This is more of an interactive post then my previous writings consisting of poems. Below is a poem that made me think of this topic. I think it is applicable and I hope you all enjoy it. I am not sure who the author is. It may even be a song. I am not sure.

I'll never know what brought me here,
As if somebody led my hand,
It seems I hardly had to steer,
My course was planned.
And destiny it guides us all,
And by it's hand we rise and fall,
But only for a moment,
Time enough to catch our breath again.

Taking in the times gone by,
We wonder how it all began,
We'll never know and still we
Try to understand,
And even though the seasons change,
The reasons shall remain the same,
It's love that keeps us holding on
Till we can see the sun again.

And I stand alone, a man of stone,
Against the driving rain--
And the night -- it's got your number,
And the wind -- it cries your name --
And we search for clues, win or lose,
In this we're all the same --
The hope still burns eternal,
We're the keeper of the flame–

And we're just another piece of the puzzle,
Just another part of the plan,
How one life touches the other
Is so hard to understand --
Still we walk this road together,
We try and go as far as we can,
And we have waited for this moment in time,
Ever since the world began.

I believe that every day is an opportunity to make good choices. And that we have the greatest gift of all -- Free Will. For instance, it's our choice to be happy -- we're not guaranteed its attainment, only its pursuit. It's our choice to be negative or positive when presented with life situations. I believe that we can be on the right path, but take a wrong turn now-and-again. Again, though, it's all determined (not pre-determined) by our own choices.

I believe this could be a much longer conversation ... But I'll leave-off for now. Hope you've been well. / *hugs* /

Very Philosophical post! My thoughts are that fate is there for everyone. There are things that are suppose to happen in your life. You can call it a test of strength or perhaps faith if you believe in God. Yes, it can be both. The saying God doesn't give you what you can't handle is very true (for me anyways).

Like the earlier post, you have choices to make everyday. These choices can change your fate either in good ways or bad ways. Some decisions are impulsive without much thought put into them. They are very risky and sometimes full of excitement. Well thought out choices are safer. We all have hurt in our life and hopefully the barriers won't prevent us from pursuing our desires and dreams.
