Just Fucking Make It Stop!

We have a new treaty with Russia. Which I'm sure is making the people at Faux News absolutely apoplectic, as don't you know, they live in the days of the Cold War and no one told them about Glastnost.

Sarah Palin has stepped down and I'm wondering what they have on her. I'm sort of disappointed that this means she will never get the nomination in 2012, as no one with an IQ over 90 would have voted for her.

Al Franken was FINALLY being sworn in, six months late. The Democrats now have that magic number of 60 and we should be celebrating. Right?

But no!

All of these things are basically asides in the news right now. What is 90% of news coverage? Michael Jackson.

Fucking enough already! I am so sick of hearing about this drug-addled well-known has-been. His career was washed up years ago, only to find new fame by touching little boys. But in death, he is suddenly some sort of God.

This bugs me. When was the last time he even had a hit? It's been years! He hasn't even done a studio album in eight years. As far as any hits off of it, well, it didn't get airplay for long and chances are that it was nostalgia that got any airplay for the album.

But suddenly, he's a star again in death. No other news seems to matter. Touching little boys and then having to buy his way out? Forgiven. that probably aren't even his? Forgiven.

It's been two weeks of non-stop coverage. I couldn't even find Franken being sworn in today. Hell, CNN doesn't even have video on their site, just a one paragraph blog blurb. By the time I finally found it on C-SPAN, it was over. Why? It is all fucking Michael Jackson on every single channel.

OK, sure, it's the memorial. But what about the non-stop news before this? When a former President dies, he doesn't get this kind of coverage. I'm amazed his family didn't have him lay in state for a week.

Then there are the collector's items. The magazines are everywhere, you can't escape them, unless you don't go out. The Franklin Mint already has a Michael Jackson charm bracelet for $90. I'm waiting for the collector plates and also, own a piece of Neverland in a *ahem* tasteful crystal pendant or some such shit. You know, like those fake pieces of the manger crosses that Ricardo Montalban was hawking a few years ago.

This is complete insanity. It needs to stop. But it won't. The fights over the his will are going to continue. His ex-wife is going to insist on genetic testing, to show his two oldest aren't his. The media is going to milk this longer than when Princess Diana died. Which is a very scary thought.

Sure, I can understand gold digging parents being upset. After all, they never got to set up their little boys so they could sue for millions. Pity them, they'll have go hunt down Gary Glitter or something.

Never have I seen so much adulation for someone with questionable sexual practices and who hasn't had a big hit in 20 years. You would think instead, would already be saying his name three times in a mirror at sleep overs, to see if he appears and gives them a "bad touch". That parents would already be using him as the boogyman. "Eat all your vegetables and clean your room, or Michael Jackson will come out of your closet as you sleep and touch you!"

But no. It's the exact opposite. And I so don't get it.

When was the last time Michael Jackson had a hit? Well... this week, because his death sent Man in the Mirror spiralling up to the rarified heights of No 2 in the UK charts.

His music never really did anything for me (some of the Jackson 5 stuff is more up my street however), but I can't deny the amazing number of people who his death seems to have touched. It's scary.

Fucking A babe !

That uppity neegrow was a wannabe white with a thing for little kids and the sooner they bury him and move on the better. But now they claim his ghost has been seen at Neverland. WTF!! More than likley its the ghost of some kid who slashed his wrists after the uppity neegrow abused him.

Now we should get back to worshiping the true King, Elvis.

Amen to that Ann. Enough already with all the Michael Jackson. Please stop the madness.

I don't like it, but here are some reasons to excuse it. Part of the problem is ratings and the news networks need to fill 24 hours of programming. The sad fact is no one would have watched 24 hours of Russian treaties. I doubt they would watch more than 10 minutes. And the Iran saga seems to ended under a government crackdown. More important, the peoples loves their Michael Jackson and they can'ts gets enough. And while I totally agree with the view that we are obsessed with celebrities in an unhealthy way, I do think Michael Jackson had the good PR sense to die on a Friday before a holiday week. Very little happens on the weekends, so he could monopolize that coverage and then very little happened during the holiday week and ensuing news-free holiday weekend before Sarah Palin went off the reservation.

Would we have this much coverage, if only Farrah died. Doubtful. And much more than Farrah Fawcett, who had been on a deathwatch, there was a lot of news with Michael Jackson. He died at a young age. It was totally unexpected. He had been in the news for a comeback tour and his death is suspicious. In addition, maybe more than any other celebrity, Americans have been obsessed with MJ for 30 years, either thru his music, his alleged crimes, his irrational spending habits, or his stunning transformation from black man to white freak.

So, he's not Jon and Kate plus eight. He is a pretty big deal in terms of the American culture. If they do this for Kirstie Alley, then you know civilization has crumbled.

Still, does anyone here buy the fact that he was the man who broke the black/white barrier in music? Is it true white people didn't listen to or buy music from black guys until Michael Jackson? Puleeze. How about Smokey Robinson, Otis Reading, or Nat King Cole? Louis Armstrong, anyone?

My biggest problem is everyone calling him the greatest entertainer that ever lived. Really? The greatest? No doubt he was extremely talented as a singer and dancer. But he was in only one movie, in a supporting role, and never any plays or such. What about Frank Sinatra? Barbara Streisand? They did it all and continued to be relevant as entertainers longer than MJ.

And as for entertainment value, he only made 4 albums in the 27 years after Thriller and I think he stopped touring in 1991. Maybe if he had worked a little more in the later years he wouldn't be so broke. Personally, I liked the Jackson 5 and MJ's early stuff, but I couldn't stand to watch him dance in the later years. All the crotch grabbing and grunting? That's the greatest entertainer? Really? And even though his last two albums went #1, they are not very good.

Obviously, the best way to avoid this is STOP WATCHING TV. This is a good philosophy to carry with you all the time, not just in the Wake of MJs death. What should you do instead of watching TV? Have sex with me. Look it is Affairlook, I need to throw a plug in for sex somewhere.

Yes! enough already. Enough to make me look forward to the excesses of hurricane season.

When I read about the Michael Jackson novelties, I kept picturing that
hideous sculpture by Conceptualist Jeff Koons--you know the highly glossy gold and white one of Michael Jackson holding Bubbles.

With today's news, you have a choice between Murdoch-style disinfo-tainment or narcissistic celebrity worship--at least that seems to be most of it.

Blues is a healer. All over the world.

Ah, but it's like the old Egyptian deities. A "king" dies and becomes God. He just wasn't talented enough to be a god and didn't even write most of his hits. If we're going to put a god spin on this, Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton were the gods who created and Jackson simply delivered the songs. Sort of like some street corner preacher that people started listening to. Hmmm... More like Ted Haggard than a god when you think about it.

I was trying to get some real news, but every channel was that memorial. I swear to you, I couldn't find real news until it was time for Keith Olberman. Who, if he even mentioned it, well, I wasn't in the room at the time.

Wasn't it the post-black MJ that decided he was a great song writer? That might be why. I'm also amused that they're mourning someone who wanted to be white. Yet he joined Nation of Islam and screamed about racism when his last studio album didn't sell. Which are really two no-nos when you want to be white.

Oh, even better. When it was over, I thought, oh good, I can get some hard news. But no. It was all about the repast, which they were calling the after-party and then had no idea what a repast was. Which is why I left the news on at that point. For the amusement factor. Then they started saying, people were calling in to tell them a repast is a black thing. Really? When did it become a black thing? It's always been called a repast in the Catholic Church, especially if the luncheon is at the church hall.

It's bad when the newscasters are as dumb as the masses.

I was a fan when I was 10. But that was the Jackson Five and the bubblegum pop. As an adult, I considered his music as bubblegum as what he was doing as a kid and it just didn't do it for me.

But if Elvis had lived to a ripe old age, no one would have made as much of it as when he did die. The same for James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and John Lennon. Notice we didn't see the the same frenzy when George Harrison died and I'm pretty sure we won't see the same frenzy with Paul McCartney, unless he dies in a plane crash or something. I don't even think Ringo Starr's death will make the news. Only people who play dead pools will notice.

We have started following truly bizarre news in this country. The other day, they were covering a car chase in Houston. For like 45 minutes, nothing but live coverage. Who the fuck cares? Except for the people on the highway at the time, who weren't in front of their TVs to see they needed to get off the highway anyway.

We allow people who while in power called the American public treasonous to get on TV and do interviews where they now endorse acts of treason. Dick Cheney, I am looking at you. Yet outside of two or three people who get news coverage, no one objects.

We truly have become an idiot nation.

When I was a little boy I would listen to Rockin Robin and ABC, but as soon as I discovered real music that was the end of that. I'm going to give Michael a free pass and say that he was a product of his environment. The public comments coming from his father are very revealing about what kind of man he is, I find it fitting that he will inherit nothing.
As far as the news vacuum I have the same complaint, what is happening in Honduras and Iran is more germaine to my existance.
I haven't heard any of the comments from his father. But in the past, I have heard about the father being well, that overly driven backstage parent. But yes, when we were kids, the bubblegum was fine. As an adult, it did nothing for me.

I wasn't even aware anything was going on in Honduras, as the news vacuum has been so bad.

Trust me when I say it won't be long before the Limbaughs and the Hannities are going to be saying President Obama used the nation being focused on the death of a drug addict to slip that disarmament treaty through. Because like, the Cold War is still going and the Berlin Wall is still up in their minds.

You know, earlier that day, the news was NOTHING but Farrah Fawcett. Her brave battle against cancer you get one way and one way only, while not mentioning the way you get it. The fact that she and Ryan O'Neal didn't call the witnesses and clergy to her hospital room so he could get the exclusive rights to her life, er, I mean get married so she didn't die in sin.

I took a nap and when I woke up they were on about Michael Jackson. Who was probably already dead. All I could think was, "man, Ryan O'Neal is going to be pissed." I know. I'm cynical.

Now, as far as breaking the black/white color barrier, let's face it. That was going on long before he came along. Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Leontyne Price, the list goes on in music. Perhaps they meant he was, as you put it, the first "black man to turn into a white freak." Because that is breaking the color barrier, isn't it?

And you know, I had never even heard of John and Kate until the news of their divorce. I so don't watch reality television.
