The most important assets

We all know it, that’s the way it has been for many years now in all the big cities of the world. One of the forms of urban violence, probably the most common of them…And in times of economical recession like now it gets even worse. People are in poverty, people are in need, sometimes they are just hungry…And that makes them much more desperate or dangerous…pick any of the words that both start with d according to your point of view. And if you really believe that there is such a big difference between them…But we don’t think of it that much until something happens, not necessarily to us but somehow it forces us to think of it again and more seriously. Just the other day I heard that burglars got into a friend’s house…And that can’t but make you think that it could maybe happen to you that very same night, maybe it is strange really that it has never happened.
And that thing got into me so now I’m thinking what I can do to protect myself, that is my house, my assets from possible thieves…Should I install an alarm system? But one is really enough? How many then? Two, three? But if they take out all of them? Maybe I should install another system to all the doors and the windows of the house as for anybody that tries to get in using any other means than an original key to receive an electroshock of a very high voltage. But if they cut off the electricity supply? Let’s go large then…I could dig a pond in the street outside, put some crocodiles in it and a fence made of barbed wire between that and the building’s door! Of course the road is public property but…whatever, I’ll figure a way. And if even that isn’t enough for sleeping safely in the thought that there is no chance of burglary I can always hire…house guards! Big, strong, ruthless, armed and with a licence to kill! And wild, mean dogs to keep them company…And after that I’ll hang a real size portrait of Sylvester Stallone as Rambo on the wall to help me get in the right mood for it! That’s the law on the west of Asia…
Because even such a thought is fucking ridiculous! And there is absolutely no reason to get panicked or, even worse, paranoid or to freak out about it…I never do any of those things anyway. What I do for many years now, actually probably since I was in my late teens, when I deal with such practical matters is to try and think of the…Chinese! Because although I don’t like everything about them, for instance and on the contrary to so many other people I quite hate their foods…I happen to think that they are probably the greatest thinkers that ever walked on earth. I really like their philosophy, I agree on too many issues with them and as for the way the approach such problems of the everyday life more even than the ancient Greeks, another school of thought that I obviously couldn’t but admire very much. And an old Chinese philosopher, can’t recall who was right now, had said something really wise about burglary and theft…
I come to the bedroom, open the door, take a quick glance in and then close the door again almost immediately. That’s it, I’ve made my mind once and for good about this issue…First of all I’m counting on my good luck, since it hasn’t happened to me till now maybe it will never happen. At least I hope so…But even if they want to come…let them come, they can really be my guests! Some stuff is somehow insured...But really there isn’t anything pricey or even too worthy in here, never had such things. Except the necessary stuff, computers and all and clothes, most of the space is taken up by records, CDs and books. I don’t think that anybody will ever bother taking those, they probably don’t even know how to make some money out of them, let alone that it is too much of a trouble even carrying them…So maybe, just maybe the only thing that is needed is something to keep out people that can be a threat to human life. Who knows, maybe in the future…if things in this city get to be much heavier than now.
But as for just burglars and thieves…I really couldn’t care less, they can come or not, whatever they like. There is one and only thing that it would really matter if it was taken from me…But it was enough to see you sleeping in the bedroom, your face on the pillow, the hair carelessly thrown around and on it and those eyes, even if they were closed at the time as to remember that priceless piece of the old Chinese wisdom: The most precious things are only those that nobody can’t ever take away from you…They can only leave you by their own will and it’s exactly that, probably more than anything else, what makes them that precious. The fact that they are always there for you when they have the freedom to go at any given time...

P. S. Due to heavy and messed up schedule in the first days of a new year the usual «Friday's song» post this week will be...«Saturday's song» post. A rare exception but every rule has one or two of them...

Just me but with all the ego left at the door...

just out of curiosity... because I didn't read you from the beginning of your blog... Could you please explain why your Friday song series began on a Friday... do you write them the same day or the day before? Thanks.

got to check that Chinese philosopher... Didn't know he was the "original".

The most precious things are the people who give you their love not even mattering how imperfect/clumsy is their way of showing it to you.

Just because it seemed more reasonable to be that day, end of the week, most people going out...And I could do with the variation you mention at the end, not that different to mine anyway.
