A Dog's Rule of Life

A Dog's Rule of Life

An eminent teacher and thinker once expressed his philosophy of life:

"When it all boils done to the essence of truth," the philosopher said, "one must live by a dog's rule of life": "If you can't eat it or screw it...PISS ON IT!"

Now I'm trying to figure out what kind of he's referring to the actual canine or the one with thumbs

I wanted to put a pic of one of my dogs with this but they are so camera shy. I can get them to sit still, just not long enough to get a good pic, but heck that's better than when I got them both.. back then they definitely way out of control.

I'm just worried warm weather is finally on its way (YEAH !!!! ) and my pit bull is better like I said, but has a way to go.

I've read all kinds of training stuff and none of it has worked, he's recognizes us as the dominate in other situations just not when it comes to not jumping and playing way to rough with the
us.

I hope we can get him where he needs to be or we might have to get rid of him I do not want to do this he is one cool and we love him to pieces !

I say let's put him on a chain, that's better than getting rid of him but hubby disagrees. Now I hate to see dogs chained up, but then again its better than him loosing his home and family.
and God forbid something bad happens...

I think as long as we let him loose ever day for exercise and give him his normal amount of affection, attention that he would adjust, .. I have also thought about only chaining him up after he displays unacceptable behavior, my thinking is sorta like with how we give time outs, corner time and such..then letting him loose after sometime, then if he doesn't misbehave we treat him ???

I have to admit I am kinda confused on this one.
and my back can not handle when he jumps on me, much less making him stay down when he is being so active.. sighs..

What do you guys think ?

LL

You say your dog is better trained than when you first had him, so that must be a step in the right direction. Pit bulls are strong, active dogs to handle at the best of times, so I can see how difficult it must be with your back. I hope you find a compromising solution.

My chow, golden retriever had a bad habit of jumping up. I started putting my knee into his ribs. Not with my force but the force he exerted. He eventually figured it out and stopped jumping on people.
My X decided to be a smart ass and keep him after our separation. Now he has been biting people. She is talking of having him put down. She called me and told me. After 3 years and I have an apartment now with no carpet I can not take him. Your decisions get you where you are at live with them.

Sorry, no words of wisdom today. I’ve never had a pit bull personally, but I know some animals are more aggressive and spirited than others and need a slightly firmer approach without deviation. I hope you find the right method.

I never had dogs as a kid, so I've been trying to catch up as an adult. I do know that my little Teo (go to my blog for a pic) needs exercise, and that he behaves better when I give him regular walks. But, as for training a dog, I suck, and I know I suck.

Good luck with your dog, sorry I couldn't be more help.

Invest in a very large dog cage for inside the house. When he does bad behavior say bad dog go to your cage and give him a 15 min.timeout.Before long when he does somethin bad he will recognize the behavior and automatically go to his cage.Eventually the bad behavior will cease.

It worked for my Beagles and my Staffordshire/American Pit bull mix that I have now.It also worked for the chowchow, the sheperd wolf mix and the aussie sheperd I had in the past. The only dog it didn't work for was the mini-rat terrier I had.

Good luck training your dog.Pit-bulls are great family dogs but need more exercize, socilization and stimulation than other breeds. The upside is they are probably one of the smartest and most loyal.

he seems very trainable its just this jumping and playing rough that he's gotta quite. I've been trying since we got him but I think he sense my weakness in my back.

yeah chaining can do that but not if done since birth animals are very adjustable beings. I dont wanna do that its our last resort. I still say its better than being put to sleep, right now no kill shelters are full
I can not afford a class right now, things are real rough.

he's close to a year, we think.. we got him from friends who found him half dead and lost, they were gonna take him to the pound

We have been doing that with barely a result, he sometimes even pushes back with his head when we do it.. who knows why he is a very cool dog and smart too.

thanks for your input and for the visit

we are doing all of those things, I'm just worried when the kids start coming around this summer, he can hurt someone just by jumping on them... no way we can afford training classes anywhere I think we have decided on using a clicker for the jumping and playing rough problem. my shih zu was severely abused and sounds alot like your poor shep. he's doing great now hes to the point he almost enjoys new people not just tolerating them.
