Family Values?

Get ready for election “wedge” politics circa 2006.

USA Today in an article dated Feb 20 reports that conservative Christian groups are pushing for legislation or ballot initiatives to outlaw adoption by gays in 16 states, including key battleground states.

"Now that we've defined what marriage is, we need to take that further and say deserve to be in that relationship," says Greg Quinlan of Ohio's Pro-Family Network, a conservative Christian group.

A couple of key points:

First, there are thousands of in Ohio and across the nation who are unable to secure adoption by “natural families”, even by heterosexual single men or women. Truth!

Second, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Welfare League of America (CWLA) and adoption advocacy groups cite research that with gay or lesbian parents fare as well as those raised in families with a mother and a father.

"Marriage or any civil union has been declared unconstitutional (in Ohio), so why would they be able to adopt ?" asks the Rev. Russell Johnson, chairman of the Ohio Restoration Project, a conservative Christian group. "These people cannot reproduce. ... Experimenting on through gay adoption is a problem."

Let’s think about the logic here. First, “these people” do reproduce. And when “they” do, wouldn’t this logic require that we “save” these from “experimentation” as well? To be sure, we could require all parents of newborns to declare their sexual orientation at the maternity ward doors. Close monitoring (by the NSA) could root out the rest.

So what’s going on here? It could be “concern” for , but notice the political implications. As reported in USA Today:

Republicans battered by questions over ethics and Iraq "might well" use the adoption issue to deflect attention and draw out conservatives in close Senate and governor races in states such as Missouri and Ohio, says Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, University of Southern California political scientist.

The aim is to replicate 2004, says Julie Brueggemann of the gay rights group PROMO: Personal Rights of Missourians. She says marriage initiatives mobilized conservative voters in 2004 and helped President Bush win in closely contested states such as Ohio. Republicans "see this as a get-out-the-vote tactic."

From the standpoint of election year politics, it’s brilliant! Genius!

Welcome to Ohio. The Heart of it All.

Having been born and raised in Ohio...and subsequently escaped, lol....I am not surprised by this. Concern for children I could buy. But when they have to bring politics into it all you have to doubt their sincerity.....whether you are a conservative or a liberal. Children especially should never be a political lever.

I hate republican policies that state they are to protect our children and do nothing but attempt to limit their cognative thinking skills and more so, the ability to live in an environment where good people will love them.

angelofmercy5, too true. The politics of fear and of hate. But it works. Sigh.

womenlooking4fun, we knew that, which only adds to the hypocrisy, doesn't it? But God knows these folks think they know God. Which pretty scary when you think about it. However, the true evil here is to "use" scare tactics about "get out the vote".

dar_tagnon12, Good to see you again! We couldn't agree more.

MOfunNOWWOW, Even under private adoptions. If the state outlaws "gay" adoptions, the surviving loving parent in Jezebelle's scenario would NOT be able to adopt. And remember, since "marriage" is ruled out, there's no "parental" rights of her partner in Ohio. Actually, the smart thing might be to move to another state that does allow gay adoptions (at least temporarily) and adopt there. Under that scenario, Ohio might be forced to recognize her partner's adoption. Any way you look at it, it aint right, and it aint fair.

It's pretty typical of politicians to cynically engineer and manipulate bigotry.

I'm so sick of politicians (and others) defining a person based solely on sexual orientation. It's such a stupid concept.

mzhunyhole, hence the phrase ... we're screwed! So good to see you again.

warmandsexy52, you make a great point about manipulating bigotry for political gain. Equally cynical is when politicians manipulate "fear" for their own ends.

womanoirish, politicians pander to their "base", and unfortunately, fundamentalists are the "base" of the right. Hey, the left got the tree-huggers. Suppose that's a fair trade.

as soon as I read "wedge politics" I knew it would be an uncomfortable subject. That's why I don't like to wear thongs. Thank you for this post, I agree.
