Is James Earl Jones a good actor ?

Patriot Games was on the other day and I ended up watching a goodly portion of it . Pretty great movie even if it is the standard 80's template of military/police dude fighting terrorists to protect family . At the least it's a little more highbrow than a lot of those kind of movies - except the climactic boat-fight which is PURE 80's . And yes I know the movie came out in '92 . That Anne Archer wasn't bad looking either you know what I'm saying ?

James Earl Jones has a small part in said film and it seemed to me like he put NO effort into this performance at all . He just came out and said his lines without any sort of inflection or feeling - it was like he was a table read or something feeding someone else lines . It was weird . I thought "That's odd he's usually such a good performer like in . . . in . . ." and then I realized aside from voice work I couldn't even think of another movie he had been in . Eventually I remembered he was also in the Kevin Costner plays baseball with a ghost movie - in which I remember his role was also pretty small and not very inspired .

So first of all is James Earl Jones a good actor or is he just a dude with a deep voice that people like ? And secondly whether he is or isn't why did I think he was ? Am I conflating him with Morgan Freeman ? And if so how racist does that make me ?

Speaking of I found out today that a wrestler I've always hated is a racist . So I feel vindicated . Which in and of itself seems wrong because I shouldn't be pumped that someone is a racist .

This is Bea Priestly . She's a wrestling lady (not the one to whom I was referring above to be clear) . There was an article about her recently where she was talking about how female athletes should not be sexualized . Fair enough . BUT on her twitter she often post sexy pictures of herself with something along the lines "check out how sexy I am" . Often with hashtags such as #boobs #babe and #hangingout (when her tits are hanging out) .

So I'm confused (as is tradition) . Is there a fine distinction I'm missing here or is she just flat out a hypocrite ? Like am I misunderstanding what it means to sexualize someone ? Is she trying to say that it's okay for her to post sexy pictures and it's okay for me to think she's sexy but what isn't okay is if I only think she's sexy and not a good wrestler ? I feel like there is a thread in there somewhere but I'm having a hard time putting my hand on it .

It's akin to when a woman dresses slutty and then is offended when she's subjected to sleazy come-ons . I agree with the sentiment but I can't explain it logically .

I know it's the worst form of critical thinking but I have no other place to start - the definition . Sexualize means to make something sexual . That makes sense - such as if a woman is sitting at her desk stapling some papers and I'm rubbing my junk going "oh yeah baby , work that stapler you dirty bitch" clearly that's sexualizing . But if a lady posts a picture of her sexy body and is all like "check out these hot tits popping out of my outfit !" am I the one doing the sexualizing ? Isn't it already sexual ?

To use a slightly less obvious example than the stapler jack off session - if a woman posts a picture of herself working out and I'm all like "UR hot , wnna fuk ?" clearly that's sexualizing . But a lot of people for sure post work out pics so people will be like "UR so hot , I love you" . So where's the line ?

I feel like this is a situation where I must fall back on quoting that 70's show ;

"Well you'll know afterwards when I get mad .

Okay , is there maybe a better system ?

No , I can't think of one ."

So I wonder if "sexualize" is one of those words people throw around a lot that actually has no meaning . Such as people generally seem to be on board with "you shouldn't sexualize women" (except when they want it) but what does that actually mean ? Question mark question mark question mark .

Anyway , Bea loses me at the end of the interview when she says ;

"Sexualising any athlete, male or female is wrong. fortunately at WCPW events we haven’t had much of that stuff happen. I think behaving like that is pathetic, and I’m pretty people who do behave that way aren’t getting much action"

First of all that's not how we spell here in Merica ! Secondly there's clearly a word missing there - supposed to be 'pretty sure' right ? But most importantly this is something that I see people do ALL the time that drives me nuts .

Things start off fine with something like "Women are not sex objects" but then it's followed up by "and anyone who thinks they are is a fat loser in their mom's basement who's never seen a real naked lady ."

How does that help anything ? I am an emotionless robot (who sexualizes women) but I understand that these are emotional issues that makes people want to lash out , but I feel like if you do that you're undercutting your whole argument . Because basically what you're saying is "You shouldn't judge , although I am judging you right now" .

I don't really know what point I'm trying to make anymore .

I like the name Bea though , I tell you what .

I suppose what I'm saying in a nutshell is "check out this hot redhead , I'd bring the ruckus to THAT ass !"

James Earl Jones - the voice of Darth Vader. The character he plays in the Jack Ryan movies (Patriot Games, the Hunt for Red October, Clear and Present Danger) is a secret keeper. He plays the character correctly - low key. He is a good actor but not a great actor. Whatever you do, DON'T watch Conan the Barbarian!

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!
