Poem: Charred

Charred

The smoke signals scream

Stay away don’t touch

As if I need forewarning

It took a lifetime of tears

The last time to smother

That which was left burning

But blind hope

Dilutes common sense

When in present

We look towards a future

In that in which is past tense

A fool once but never again

Say the feeble words

Of those once burned

Undoubtedly some of us never learn

For where there is smoke

There is fire

Those smoldering desires

Not completely extinguished

Only slightly waned

A soul foolish enough

To indulge in a old flame

Succumbing to the same fate

My heart burnt once again

Clouding my vision that same smoke

Leaving me temporarily impaired

Unable to see all in which is there

Disguised are the lies and deceit

So for every good time

Lingers an after taste bitter sweet

With my better mind saying walk away

Yet swayed by love's adversary

Armed with the illusion of better days

Igniting my false hopes

A game perfectly played

Knowing exactly what to say

Striking the chord

To calm my fears

Talented tongue

Telling tall tales

Leaving me mentally twisted

Searching for something lost

Where it never really existed

Explaining this empty feeling

Inside as I exclaim why

With no answers

If this is truly love

Then I fear love is a cancer

With no cure or remedy

Left with a pen as my only therapy

My spirit forever charred

With two lifetimes of emotional scars…
