Update: SpoCon

*UPDATE*

Apparently Steampunk and Doctor Who are HUGE right now. There were so many Doctors running around haha. And there is discussion about Spokane having a Steampunk Convention, devoted entirely to the fad.

Where I Wandered:

*The Science of Steampunk
*Character Building - Using Landscapes and buildings as characters
*Steampunk Archetypes
*Safety tips for backstories
*The Philosophy of Doctor Who
*Character Motives and Psyche
*Crafting a drop spindle and spinning (I was asked to help with this one after I showed up)
*Steampunk How-To (Show & Tell from SP Crafters)
*Makeup and Body Paint with Roget Ratchford

As for Doctor Who: I *still* have never seen a single episode. But I'm fascinated by what everybody tells me.

A few autographed books, A few new favorite artists... look for the art of Jeff Sturgeon. Acrylic on aluminum / Archival Metal. The photos online do NOT do them justice. The aluminum backing makes the galaxy POP... you almost feel the stars spinning.

Tandy Leather Co had a room there... Mmm! Leather... despite my tree-hugger, bunny-loving, kinda wanna-be vegetarian, "Save the Animals!" mentality... I still LOVE the scent of leather. I now own a deerskin (a friend told me a month ago they were on sale. They still are), and a good leather belt.

Regarding the highlighted panels: Those were my favorites

Now... what to do with my Sunday?

If you saw somebody while seated in a panel audience, 5 seats away (close enough to look at but not close enough to initiate casual conversation) that you felt was very attractive, such that you just couldn't stop looking... how would you approach said person? Or would you? No ring. No costume or anything to give a "Hey! Sorry, I just had to follow you and ask about..." opening.

If you saw said person you wanted to attract while seated in a panel discussion... ask about the panel discussion!

The sessions you attended sound very cool. Would love to know more about the "Science of Steampunk" and character-creation ones. Hope you'll give more details about those...

And... what character did you put on?

hahha... duh. That's so obvious LOL... I think that did brush across my mind briefly. I wasn't able to catch up with him afterwards though and never saw him again.

Oh! And no character... next year, however, I will do SOMEthing. Not sure what though.

I saw a few episodes of Dr Who on PBS way back in the 70's. I didn't "get it" then and don't "get it" now. Kinda like the zombie thing.

But ... to each their own.

As to one of your questions. I wouldn't bother approaching them. Getting rejected online is bad enough.

That's part of what held me back. I don't typically initiate ever... would hate to be rejected the one time I stepped out of my comfort zone lol. Of course being unable to catch up with him (without being undignified and obviously chasing him) took that decision out of my hands. haha.

For me only the Tom Baker episodes are worth watching, and barely. I saw a few of them in pre-cable days, at a time when there was no other SF on TV. I hadn't thought about what makes Baker different, but cockadoodle111 nailed it. It's the way he carries the humor.

Most Dr. Who episodes drag for me. I think they are mostly morality plays about how The Doctor always finds a non-violent solution. Of course he's able to do that because the writers set it up that way.

In some of the Tom Baker episodes there's a little robot dog equipped with a laser weapon, who can take care of the violence so The Doctor doesn't have to. The robot dog is cute, another reason to like those episodes.

One of my favorite quotable lines is from a Dr. Who episode. "I didn't realize dying heroically would be such a strain on the nerves."

My favorite Dr. Who is the weeping angel one, you don't have to watch any other episode to follow it. Super creepy!

I probably wouldn't approach the person if there wasn't anything obvious to start a conversation about, I am too big of a chicken if I'm not liquored up. Now - I might stare them down or "accidentally" bump into them.

If I'd been a couple seats closer, or a little less clueless when I followed him up to the front afterwards to meet the authors... and if he were a little slower leaving... maybe next time I will throw something at him. "Oops! I'm sorry, I dropped my pencil"

On the other hand: Some men I guess are meant to be fantasy-material and not reality.
