Rules I try to Live By

We all have rules we try to live by. This is a personal attitude I have about how I choose to live each day. Here are a few I try to live by.

My word -
What I say and tell others about what I will do or not do.
Keeping my word, or "Doing what I say I will do."
To me keeping my word is all I really have. It defines my character. Seems so many people today can't do what they say they will do. It really bugs me when someone says "I will be there." then not show up. Not even a call. Oh well, nothing I can do about what others say or do. The only person I have any control over is me. I choose to be a man of my word.

Honesty
Honesty is also very important to me. Being honest is not always so easy. At least if you hear it from me, it will be the truth as I know it to be. What I say may not be what you want to hear, but at least you can believe me. Being honest is the only way to build trust. For others to trust you can take a life time. To lose it can happen in the blink of an eye. Usually lost because of a lie. I like what Mark Twain had to say, "When you tell the truth, you don't have to remember what you said." As I get older, this becomes more important as I suffer sometimers from time to time. ( Sometimers = What I said, I forget."

Doing good deeds
I try to do a good deed each day. This means that when I can help another person, and I can help, I usually will. This has to be done with the attitude that you will not get anything back from helping another. I do it because it makes me feel good when I can help someone, and it is the right thing to do. Some people may take this as a sign of weakness and will take advantage of my acts of kindness. It is not a sign of weakness to me. I have paid the price for these acts of kindness. But once again, I have no control over what others do, only over what I do.

I have tried to live my life so that when I die, and stand before my creator, I can look them in the eye and account for how I have lived. Of course I have made mistakes, make bad choices now and then. There are many things I wish I had done different. But as I look back on my life, I have had a great life. I have been blessed with things that are truly important. There are things I would like to do yet. I wake each day and look forward to what the day will bring.

All I have is the now. I can not change a thing about what has past. It is behind me forever. All I can do with the past is remember it and learn from it. I can plan for the future, but that is no guarantee that it will happen as planned. Most the time plans seldom unfold as I thought they would. The joy comes in the journey.

There is more about me than just these few words here but this is a good start in getting to know who I am.

I would like to be remembered as a man
of good character.
